A 24-year-old man was shot in the calf, and a Yonkers police officer was taken to the ICU after he jumped over a landing and fell 10 feet during a confrontation with the suspect.

A New York police officer suffered broken vertebrae and a concussion after he fell 10 feet during a confrontation with a suspect Monday.

The incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. at an apartment building in Yonkers, WPIX-TV reports. Police were responding to calls of a man waving a gun on the third floor of the building.

It's unclear what transpired between the five responding officers and the 24-year-old suspect they confronted. At some point, a veteran officer who had been on the force for over two decades jumped over a landing and fell 10 feet, injuring himself.

In the confrontation, the suspect was shot in the calf. It wasn't immediately known how the shooting occurred or if the suspect was truly armed.

The injured officer broke four vertebrae and suffered a concussion in the fall. He was taken to the hospital and placed in intensive care.

Authorities have been unable to talk to the officer while he has been in the hospital. Doctors have been keeping him sedated in the ICU.

Police were still waiting as of 6 p.m. for a search warrant to allow them to collect evidence from the scene of the shooting. Investigators also will examine body camera footage from the incident.
